Rangitoto College: How New Zealand’s Largest School Partners With FACTS.

Rangitoto College is a state co-educational school on Auckland’s North Shore, and New Zealand’s largest school, with more than 4,100 students on a single campus. It is high performing and deeply diverse, offering a full academic, sporting and performing arts programme, all on a state school budget.

For a school this large, one question sits behind every system it relies on. Will it cope at our scale? For more than twenty years, Rangitoto College has trusted FACTS School Management to do exactly that, from three grading systems to Ministry and NZQA compliance, integrations and school-designed workflows.

The Choice: A System That Works Around the School

Rangitoto was an early adopter of FACTS, implementing the system in 2006, when New Zealand schools were first required to have a student management system. The school knew how it wanted to operate, and what stood out about FACTS was the flexibility to configure the School Management System (SMS) around Rangitoto’s needs, not the other way around.

For Pete, the strength of the partnership comes down to four things: being committed, compliant, customisable and customer focused.

Committed: A Partner That Shows Up, and Stays

For Rangitoto, the strength and stability of the relationship mattered from the outset. The school was looking for more than another software supplier. It wanted a partner it could rely on for the long term.

“You are in the New Zealand market and you are not leaving. You are not a flash in the pan, roll with us for three years and then you are gone,” says Pete.

That continuity has given Rangitoto confidence that FACTS will keep showing up when it matters, whether that means responding to new Ministry of Education attendance requirements, adapting to regulatory change or continuing to evolve the system as the school’s needs change.

Customisable: “We See Ourselves Through Our SMS”

Rangitoto runs three curricula side by side: IB and NCEA for senior students, and its own diploma qualifications for Years 9 to 11, each with a completely different grading structure. All three live inside a single Markbook, configured by the school itself.

“Teachers put the grades in and FACTS does the rest,” says Pete. For an IB class, where four assessments at different weightings resolve into an overall percentage and then a one to seven grade, teachers simply enter the marks. The system handles the calculation, the conversion and the reporting.

The same adaptability extends across the school:

  • A points structure the school configured itself to fairly recognise every co-curricular commitment, from premier rugby to community service
  • An open API that syncs student data into Google Classroom overnight. “The data always being correct in Classroom is magical,” says Pete

Compliant: Keeping Pace With Change

Compliance requirements for New Zealand schools continue to evolve, and at Rangitoto College’s scale, staying on top of those changes matters. FACTS School Management works closely with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), helping schools respond to changing requirements with confidence.

“NZQA requirements are complex, but FACTS takes that complexity away from the school. We can submit what we need with confidence, knowing the system is keeping pace with the requirements,” says Pete.

Submitting results to NZQA can be done at the click of a button. And when the Ministry introduced new attendance management requirements, the FACTS team moved quickly to reflect those changes in the software, helping Rangitoto stay aligned without having to work through the technical implications on its own.

A Team that Listens and Acts

“You are very much about the success of your customers. You show up,” says Pete.

As a member of the FACTS School Management Product Advisory Board, Pete sees that commitment firsthand. His feedback is listened to and reflected in the way the product continues to evolve, from the homepage redesign to live assessment reporting and the student insights work now underway.

“Twenty years in, the product is still making things better for us. That is worth celebrating,” says Pete.

What Pete Would Tell Another School Leader

Asked whether FACTS could handle a school of Rangitoto’s size, Pete does not hesitate.

For Rangitoto College, a decision made twenty years ago still stands up today. At more than 4,100 students, Rangitoto is proof that the right system and the right partner can stand the test of time.
